There can be no doubt about the hardship of living and working the farms up in the mountains. The summers were hot (though not humid like down at the coast), and the winters were cold. Also, in some years, frost came after the almonds (and even the cherries) were in blossom, wiping out that years crop. But the landscape... just beautiful.
