The lift, Elevador de Santa Justa, was "built" at the very late 18-hundreds by a certain Mesnier de Posnard who is said to be an Eiffel disciple
Well, whoever  the architect or the actual financier of this structure was; it is indeed an evidence and proof of there being money around in Lisboa at that time.
However, being mega rich and living up on the Chiado hill, I might have built me one of these as well, just to be able to get home after a night on the town, without falling flat on my face   again and again. on slippery cobblestone plastered streets
